In 2004, ERC civil rights testers traveled to Archstone Smith properties across the nation. Archstone was the seventh largest developer of apartment complexes in the U.S. at the time. The testing found evidence that Archstone apartment complexes had steps at entryways, doorways that were too narrow, insufficient turning space in kitchens and bathrooms, and other barriers that prevented persons using wheelchairs from entering or fully using the apartment units and building facilities. ERC reached a historic settlement with Archstone, requiring the company to survey all 71 of its properties and remedy barriers.
