Disability Rights
More than 55 million people in the United States have some form of disability. This huge segment of the population is a frequent target of illegal discrimination.
Federal, state and local laws prohibit discrimination based on physical or mental disability. These include the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act (Amended), the Rehabilitation Act and a variety of state and local human rights acts.
Each year, the Equal Rights Center receives numerous complaints from individuals denied the right to work, shop, eat, sleep and receive reasonable services because an employer, a store, restaurant, developer, hotel, hospital, government office, or bank operates in violation of the laws guaranteeing people with disabilities the right to enjoy the same choices able-bodied people take for granted each day. The ERC works to resolve these individual complaints and address systemic discrimination against people with disabilities on a national basis. To read about the ERC's major class action law suit involving more than 18,000 individuals against MetroAccess – the paratransit service for people with disabilities in the greater Washington, D.C. area – click here.
The discrimination is so constant that a great many people with disabilities stopped complaining formally about the violations directed against them. The ERC believes that discouragement must lead to action rather than inaction if change is to happen.
If you or someone you know is a victim of illegal discrimination based on a disability, contact the ERC immediately by sending an e-mail to Jennifer Conrad at jconrad@equalrightscenter.org or call her at 202.370.3210, ext. 1110.
The ERC is also equipped to help business and property owners and management to know and comply with the civil right laws -- including those affecting people with disabilities.
