On April 11, 2005, the Equal Rights Center, in cooperation with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and the law offices of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld as well as Steptoe & Johnson and McDermott, Will & Emory, filed civil rights lawsuits against three of the largest D.C. landlords and property management companies. These actions allege discrimination based on source of income and race against tenants with Housing Choice Vouchers, formerly referred to as Section 8 vouchers, in the District of Columbia.

More than 55 million people in the United States have some form of disability. This huge segment of the population is a frequent target of illegal discrimination.

The Equal Rights Center reached a tentative settlement of a class action lawsuit against MetroAccess, the District’s paratransit service for people with disabilities. Under the terms of the multi-million dollar settlement, which is subject to court approval, MetroAccess will hire expert consultants to assist in its ongoing oversight of MetroAccess performance and enhance service by increasing the paratransit budget by $4 million a year over a three-year period.

Washington Hospital Center Agrees to Landmark Settlement To Improve Access for Patients With Disabilities. This agreement represents the resolution of a lawsuit filed on November 25, 2003, by the Disability Rights Council of Greater Washington (now the ERC), and four former patients who experienced inadequate care, services and facilities at the Hospital Center.

On September 22, 2005, the Equal Rights Center filed a complaint in federal court in Maryland on behalf of people with disabilities against national apartment developer AvalonBay Communities. The complaint alleges that AvalonBay has engaged in continuous and systematic violations of the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

On September 15, 2005, the Equal Rights Center filed a complaint in federal court in Maryland on behalf of people with disabilities against local apartment developer The Bozzuto Group alleging continuous and systematic violations of the Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
