It is now settled! The major class action law suit involving more than 18,000 individuals against MetroAccess – the paratransit service in the greater Washington, D.C. area has received final court approval. This means customers should see an improvement in the level of services they receive from MetroAccess.
The settlement, resulting from a lawsuit originally brought in March 2004 by the ERC and 14 named plaintiffs, provides for a substantial commitment by MetroAccess to improvements in general staffing, customer service, communications, and fleet size.
The ERC has worked diligently to reach this unprecedented settlement with MetroAccess. On July 2, 2008, the settlement became final by order of U.S. Federal Court Judge Henry H. Kennedy. Specifically, the settlement requires MetroAccess to implement more than 130 recommendations made by experts and riders, and to increase its budget by $4 million a year over a three-year period. Some of that money will go toward purchasing extra vehicles and hiring more operators to alleviate many of the service problems complained about by riders.
MetroAccess patrons will receive 10 free ride vouchers, good for one one-way MetroAccess trip. Additionally, each customer who experiences late or missed service on a MetroAccess trip or experiences poor service and files a complaint with MetroAccess will receive two (2) free ride vouchers.
